BGMEA underlines Bangladesh apparel industry is frontrunner in sustainability


Shahidullah Azim, who is the Vice-President of Bangladesh’s apex apparel makers’ body of BGMEA, has maintained the sector is a frontrunner in the marathon of sustainability while adding sustainability was a core area of concern in the global business landscape.

Speaking at a seminar titled, ‘Manufacturing in Efficient and Sustainable Way’ in Dhaka recently, Azim maintained Bangladesh today boasts of the highest number of green factories globally, with 168 LEED Green factories certified by the US Green Building Council (USGBC), 50 of which are rated Platinum.

“550 more factories in the pipeline; moreover, 40 out of the top 100 industrial projects in the world are in Bangladesh,” claimed the BGMEA Vice-President while adding the garment makers’ body has proactively taken the issue of sustainability to the core of its strategic vision even as he observed ‘a major demographic of the global consumer is now concerned about sustainable consumption and production’.
