400kg of heroin-coated yarn seized at Gujarat port

Ahmedabad : Drug smugglers tried to spin a yarn but failed to pull the wool over the eyes of alert authorities in Gujarat as they confiscated bales weighing 395kg of spun thread laced with heroin inside a shipping container in Pipavav port of Amreli district on Thursday.

This is the first instance of such a method being caught in India, though authorities in South America and Europe have come across narcotics-coated fabric and garment, said a directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) official. The operation was con-

ducted jointly by officers from Gujarat anti-terrorist squad (ATS) and DRI.

According to sources, officials have been able to extract 90kg of heroin — approximately Rs 450 crore in the international market — from the yarn. There are more to go. “The yarn was soaked in water with the contraband and dried. They wash the fabric to retrieve the powder,” said an official. “These were packed with other bales. It’s impossible to distinguish unless one gets a specific input. ”
